A few kilometres from Montbazon, on a wooded promontory overlooking the Indre valley, Domaine de la Tortinière is one of those places where time seems to stand still. This Second Empire villa, surrounded by a park of centuries-old trees, radiates a romantic, intimate atmosphere that the great neoclassical estates rarely achieve. No austere façade, no state rooms: everything here breathes softness, understated refinement, inner warmth.
As a wedding photographer at Domaine de la Tortinière, I return regularly with the feeling of revisiting a place that needs no enhancing. It enhances itself.
Light filtered through the trees
What sets La Tortinière apart from many other Loire Valley estates is the quality of its light within the park. The centuries-old trees filter the sun and create, particularly in late afternoon, a soft, warm, almost golden light that rivals the best studios. For couple portraits, it is an extraordinary resource: faces are flattered, colours are deep, shadows are gentle.
The domain overlooks the Indre, and this elevated position offers open views across the valley that I regularly use for group photographs or panoramic portraits. The view from the lawns towards the river, especially in the evening, is breathtaking.
A venue built for intimate weddings
La Tortinière is not a venue for weddings of 200 people. It is a venue for couples who want their day to be truly theirs, surrounded by the people who matter, in a setting that reflects who they are. Intimate weddings find their truest expression here: the space is human in scale, distances are short, emotions flow freely between guests.
As a photographer, I find that weddings at La Tortinière produce some of the most moving reportages I make. The closeness of the guests, the hushed atmosphere of the estate, the particular quality of the light: everything conspires to bring the genuine moments to the surface.
My approach
I work in documentary reportage style. I do not stage couples, I accompany them. At La Tortinière, this often means staying back in the park during the cocktail hour, waiting for conversations to warm up and glances to fall naturally. Then moving in quietly, framing, firing the shutter. Stepping back before anyone has noticed.
For couple portraits, I work in natural light, using gaps in the tree canopy and the raking late-day sun. Portrait sessions at La Tortinière rarely last more than 20 minutes: the essential images come quickly, when the couple is still fully inside the emotion of their day.
